Lucia train on the roof

Lucia train on the roof

Every year on 13 December a Lucia procession crosses the roof of Uppsala Castle – led by the year's brave Lucia.

A tradition high above Uppsala

The Lucia train on the roof is not a bookable activity but an annual tradition. The theme is courage: overcoming fear and doing something that can inspire others. Anyone can be nominated – yourself or someone else.

Shortly before Lucia day, a small coronation ceremony is held. The new Lucia is then crowned Lucia of the Year on the castle roof on 13 December at 19:00, as the procession sets off through the north dome of Uppsala Castle.

Who can be nominated?

Nominate yourself or someone you think has been brave during the year – someone who has done something that can inspire others. It could be a person who overcame a fear that previously held them back, saved someone's life at risk to their own, or stood up for something at the risk of consequences. An unselfish act.

It is not the number of nominations that decides, but what the person has achieved during the year – an event or challenge someone took on and completed despite being afraid.

Watch the Lucia train

The audience gathers down by Svandammen to watch the procession cross the roof. Come along and experience the celebration from the ground – no ticket needed.
